CROATOAN

The Lost colony of Roanoke. Why am I not surprised? The theory that I had about this place being out of touch with reality as we know it has to be spot on. I couldn’t exactly remember when the Mary Celeste vanished, but I thought it was around the Civil War. Therefore, between myself being from 2013, Amelia being from the 1930s, Captain Briggs from the late 1800s, and our new guest Mr. William Clement being from the late 1500s, we are an amalgam of timelines and places. We just had to put together whatever it was that we all had in common, aside from the fact that we were all stuck here.

The one up side – if you could call it that – was that I didn’t have to do any explaining to Amelia about what happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke. She was well versed in the disappearance of the colonists off the coast of North Carolina. She knew about the word CROATOAN being carved into a tree, and even knew the story of Virginia Dare, the first person born in the new world. The problem was that we both knew the story, and unfortunately, it did not have an ending. Not that it had a bad ending; it was the fact that no one knew exactly what had happened in the three years after the colonists had been left. There had been plenty of theories about what had happened, but there was no definitive answer. For that matter, everyone that I had encountered thus far was in the same boat; disappeared without a trace or an explanation.

William offered to take us to his people, but he couldn’t precisely tell us how long it would take to get there. The scenery didn’t change much, aside from following the base of some random mountain. We followed William for a good while; I was unable to track exactly how long, but it felt like an hour or more. He didn’t say much, and neither did we. I didn’t really ask him anything; I didn’t figure he would have much to say, anyway. The little bit of information that I knew about him was enough for now.

As we walked along my mind wandered again. Depression was something that I had to fight off before, and believe you me, it got bad sometimes. When I first moved to River’s End, I had no friends, no acquaintances, or anyone else for that matter. The idea of moving to Virginia sounded like a great idea when my therapist had suggested it, but once I was actually there, I realized how alone I really was. Moving back to Ohio would have been much easier on my nerves, but my therapist said that I had to physically remove myself from where I had been for fear of seeing or doing something that would trigger more issues. I reluctantly agreed to search more a new home, and a little over two months later, I had chosen River’s End.
